Prediabetes is reversible. Weight is the lever.

A prediabetes diagnosis is a clinical window. Meaningful, sustained weight loss — achieved under physician supervision — is one of the most effective interventions for preventing the progression to type 2 diabetes. The evidence is clear. The clinical support to act on it is often not.

What prediabetes means and why physician-supervised weight loss matters.

Prediabetes is defined by blood glucose levels higher than normal but below the threshold for type 2 diabetes diagnosis. In Canada, an estimated 5 to 7 million adults are living with prediabetes — the majority undiagnosed. Without intervention, roughly 15 to 30 percent will progress to type 2 diabetes within five years.

The relationship between excess weight — particularly visceral fat — and prediabetes is well established. Visceral fat drives insulin resistance by releasing inflammatory signals that impair the body’s ability to use insulin effectively. Reducing visceral fat reduces insulin resistance. This is measurable, and it is clinically achievable under physician supervision.

What the evidence shows

Large, well-conducted clinical trials have demonstrated that meaningful weight loss — 5 to 10 percent of body weight — significantly reduces the risk of progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes. The more weight lost and the better it’s maintained, the greater the risk reduction. Physician supervision, medication where appropriate, and structured behavioural support produce better outcomes than unassisted lifestyle change alone.

The metabolic urgency

Prediabetes is not a soft warning. Patients with prediabetes already have measurable cardiovascular risk, reduced kidney function protection, and a higher likelihood of progression to conditions requiring medication management. Acting now — with a real clinical program — is substantially more effective than waiting.

A program built around metabolic outcomes, not just scale weight.

Comprehensive metabolic bloodwork

Your assessment includes fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, lipid panel, and other markers relevant to your metabolic picture. We know where you are before we build a plan.

Physician oversight with metabolic context

Your supervising physician reviews your metabolic labs alongside your body composition and weight picture throughout treatment. If your numbers are moving in the right direction, you’ll know. If something needs adjustment, it’s caught early.

Visceral fat as a primary target

Body composition monitoring at WeightDoctor tracks waist circumference as a proxy for visceral fat load alongside scale weight and lean mass. We’re managing the fat that matters metabolically — not just total weight.

Prescription support where appropriate

Weight loss medication, where clinically indicated, accelerates the meaningful weight loss that drives the greatest metabolic benefit. Candidacy is determined at your assessment based on your clinical picture.

Muscle preservation

Loss of lean muscle mass during weight loss further impairs metabolic rate and glucose handling. Our muscle preservation protocol protects lean mass throughout treatment — this is especially important in patients managing insulin resistance.

Weekly counselling

Sustainable dietary change — not restriction, but a practical restructuring of eating patterns to support glucose stability — is delivered through 10 weekly sessions with a nutritional counsellor. Protein targets, meal timing, carbohydrate quality, and resistance exercise are addressed practically and consistently.

Referred by your doctor?

WeightDoctor accepts direct referrals from family physicians and nurse practitioners for patients with prediabetes. After assessment, a clinical summary is available to referring physicians on request.

If your physician has recommended weight loss as part of your prediabetes management — and you want a structured program with physician oversight, not just general advice — WeightDoctor is the referral.

Available virtually across Ontario

The full WeightDoctor program — including assessment, weekly counselling, prescription support, and monitoring — is available virtually to patients across Ontario. You don’t need to be in Mississauga.

Who you'll work with

WeightDoctor patients work with a clinical team, not a single provider. Your physician supervises your care. Your counsellor delivers it — week by week.

Is WeightDoctor right for you?

Candidacy for the program and for prescription support is determined at your medical assessment. Patients with prediabetes who are motivated to reduce their diabetes risk and willing to commit to a 10-week structured program are often strong candidates.

Clinical Support

Booking, follow-up, and program coordination are handled by our clinical support team. Questions between sessions are answered. Nothing falls through the cracks.

The window is open. A clinical program is the best way through it.
